The 5-Minute Pre-Flight Ritual: How to Install an eSIM via QR Code
Airports are stressful. You’ve taken off your shoes for security, your gate just changed from A12 to C43, and you’re trying to remember if you left the stove on.
The absolute last thing you want to deal with is landing in a foreign country with no internet, unable to load the directions to your Airbnb, desperately hunting for an airport Wi-Fi network that requires your passport number and first-born child to connect.
Enter: The 5-Minute Pre-Flight Ritual. Because Nomad Telecom is 100% app-free, installing your travel data is something you can do at your departure gate while sipping an overpriced coffee. Here is how to achieve total connectivity nirvana before you even board the plane.
Step 1: The Gate Purchase (Minute 1-2)
You’re sitting at the gate. You have free airport Wi-Fi.
-
Go to nomadtelecom.co.
-
Search for your destination (e.g., Japan, UK, Europe Regional).
-
Pick your data amount and check out as a guest. No account creation needed.
Step 2: The Inbox Magic (Minute 3)
Within seconds, a bright red Nomad Telecom email will hit your inbox. Inside, you will find a QR code.
Pro-Tip: If you only have one phone, you can't scan a QR code that's on your own screen! Simply screenshot the QR code and send it to your laptop, iPad, or your travel partner’s phone so you can scan it with your camera.
Step 3: The Native Scan (Minute 4-5)
For iPhone Users:
-
Open your camera and point it at the QR code.
-
A yellow button will appear saying "Cellular Plan." Tap it.
-
Follow the on-screen prompts. Label your new plan "Travel" and keep your primary home number turned on for iMessage/Calls.
-
Go to Settings > Cellular > and turn Data Roaming ON for your new Nomad plan.
For Android Users:
-
Go to Settings > Connections > SIM Manager.
-
Tap "Add mobile plan" or "Add eSIM."
-
Select "Scan carrier QR code."
-
Scan the code from your email and hit confirm! Ensure Data Roaming is toggled on for the new profile.
Step 4: Airplane Mode
Now, just turn on Airplane Mode, order a ginger ale from the flight attendant, and relax.
The magic happens when you land. While everyone else on the plane is sprinting toward the plastic SIM card kiosks in the arrivals terminal, you simply turn off Airplane Mode. Your phone will instantly ping the local towers, and your WhatsApp messages will start flowing in while you're still taxiing to the gate.
Welcome to the future of travel.
